"Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off." Proverbs 23:18
Arnold Schwarzenegger gave us ‘I’ll be back.’
Elisha gave us ‘By this time tomorrow...'
Life for some reason (I think we all know the reason) seems more daily than before.
Some days it feels like I am waiting for something to happen, but everything feels ordinary, mundane and routine. No visible sign that something is about to change.
How can we get through these ordinary days?
From personal experience, I have come to find that having joyful expectations truly helps.
You know what makes ordinary days ordinary? The absence of indicators to the extraordinary.
Each time Elisha said, by this time tomorrow, the declaration that followed was always something so seemingly impossible, it sounded absurd.
How can that be? No visible indicators to support the expectation of the extraordinary.
In II kings 7:1-2, when Elisha prophesied what the prices of a seah of fine flour and barley would be sold for by this time tomorrow, they were still in the thick of the famine. On a very ordinary day, God asked them to expect the extraordinary.
The King's Officer is us sometimes, isn’t that so?
Too quick to dissect the word of God.
In fact, I'll be honest to admit that sometimes there is a nanosecond pause before I say Amen to some prayers. In that nanosecond, my brain does quick math. So if I send the application now, add Y, minus Z, take in the probability of J and K happening simultaneously, what are the chances this would happen within said time?
For thus says the Lord: 'You shall not see wind, nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, so that you, your cattle, and your animals may drink. And this is a simple matter in the sight of the Lord.' II Kings 3:17-18b
In the ordinary days, I remember this scripture. It encourages my heart to be expectant always, even when I don't see the indicators I am looking out for. In fact, it reminds me not to look out for or rely on indicators at all. Going through the day on the lookout for indicators just breeds anxiety and discouragement.
You know what's crazy? It is so easy to believe something bad can happen suddenly. Some of us wake up daily, haunted by these thoughts, but how many of us wake up confident that something jaw-dropping can happen? How many of us wake up expecting a miracle?
If someone had told Rebecca by this time tomorrow she would meet her husband and be married, I wonder what she would have said.
What? How? Nothing special is happening tomorrow. I’m just going down to the well like I do every other day, going through the same route too! Another ordinary day!
For the lame man at the gate called Beautiful, it was another ordinary day, until it wasn't ( Acts 3:1-8).
For the man at the pool of Bethesda, it was another ordinary day, until it wasn't (John 5:1-8).
Do not despise the ordinary days.
In the ordinary days, declare God's promises over you.
On ordinary days, declare your expectations.
Expect a miracle.
Expect to see God.
Expect the extraordinary.
Every day can be magic.
Every day, after all, is a gift. Live it well.
