WHEN THE BROOK DRIES UP

"Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God;"
Psalms 42:5

The vulnerability displayed in the book of Psalms is one of the reasons I love this particular book of the Bible. David was a man who felt things passionately. Be it love, sorrow, happiness, gratitude, pain, fear, etc. He felt all these emotions and expressed them in their purest form, almost with childlike directness.
Sincerely, the more I study the book of Psalms, the more I learn to be open and honest with myself and with God in the secret place.

I don't know about you, but with everything going on in the world today, I have been going through a range of emotions. Up and down like a yoyo. One day, like Elijah in I Kings 17:1-7, I am by the brook. The next day, it dries up, and I go back to feeling anxious.

Recently, I had to ask the same question David asked in Psalms 42:5.

Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me?

Confronting this question takes a certain level of vulnerability. It is to first admit that you are downcast and then be brave enough to dig deep and address the source.

Whatever the answer is, the solution is almost always 'hope in the Lord!'
Why are you anxious? I ask myself? Do you not trust God?
Why are you fearful? Do you not know the Lord is with you everywhere you go?
What is that which is too big for the Almighty God to do?
What is that need that you think the possessor of heaven and earth cannot meet?
What is that problem you think the extraordinary strategist cannot solve?

The list goes on.

I have found that by asking this question, I can more easily confront the root of those deep seethed emotions that just swim and well up inside me.

I urge you to do the same too. When you feel low, burdened, or troubled, ask the same question David did. You will find that even when the brook dries up, your source still remains.
Hope in Him.

Though The floods have risen up, the floods have roared like thunder, but the Lord above is mightier than these! (Psalm 93:3-4 paraphrased).

May this be your everyday confession in this season, and may you be uplifted as you hope in the Lord. Amen.
